Lowest Maintenance
Low Maintenance Grass for North Florida Lawns
Centipede grass sod is a low, slow-growing, medium-textured, drought tolerant warm season grass that produces a dense, attractive turf. Light green color, distinctive among Florida warm season grasses. Best in sunny areas with light shade tolerance.
- Lowest fertilization and maintenance requirements in the lineup
- Warm season heat tolerant, fits the Southeast climate
- Best in full sun, tolerates moderate shade
- Slow vertical growth means fewer mowings per season
- Few serious pest or disease issues
- Soil-enhancing roots introduce organic matter to sandy areas
- Often called "lazy man's grass" because it asks for so little
Best ForLow-traffic residential yards, sandy acidic soils common across the Gulf South, and owners who want fewer fertilizer applications and weekend chores.
Why Centipede Earned the "Lazy Man's Grass" Name
Centipede grows slow. That is the whole pitch. Less mowing, less fertilizer, less fuss. For Florida yards on acidic sandy loam, it forms a dense, even mat that needs almost nothing to stay healthy.
Color is light green, not dark like Bermuda or Zoysia. If a darker yard is what you want, pick a different grass. If you want a lawn that looks good without weekend chores, Centipede is the answer.
Types of Centipede Grass Sod
Common Centipede
The standard variety in widespread use across the Gulf South. Spreads by stolons and forms a dense mat over time. Light green color, distinctive among warm season grasses. Requires the least input of any residential grass.
TifBlair Centipede
A certified cultivar from the University of Georgia with finer, darker green blades than Common. Good cold and freeze tolerance. Forms a denser, more compact turf for properties at the cold edge of the Centipede range.
Hammock Centipede
A medium bright green Centipede selection with a dense low turf and vigorous stolons. Suited to Florida heat and rainfall extremes. Lesser-known than Common or TifBlair but a strong fit for Florida residential.
Not recommended for high-traffic areas like dog runs or yards with kids playing daily. For those uses, St. Augustine or Bermuda are better fits.
